Acupuncture During IVF: Evidence and Coordinated Care
Ben Wong · · Updated

Acupuncture during IVF is a complementary-care decision. Some patients seek it for comfort or stress-related symptoms, but it should not be presented as proven to increase the chance of a live birth for every patient. IVF medicines, procedures and timing remain directed by the fertility team.
Pregnancy rates and live births are different outcomes
Studies vary in design, patient groups, timing and comparison treatment. A large randomized trial published in JAMA in 2018 did not find a significant live-birth benefit from acupuncture compared with sham acupuncture. Mechanism proposals about blood flow or hormones do not by themselves establish improved pregnancy outcomes.
Traditional models provide a different framework
Chinese medicine discusses reproductive health through patterns and concepts such as the kidney, Chong and Ren vessels. These are traditional interpretive models, not direct measurements of ovarian reserve, embryo quality or the hypothalamic–pituitary–ovarian axis.
Plan around the fertility team’s calendar
Bring the expected stimulation, retrieval or transfer dates and update the office if they change. Avoid scheduling that adds travel pressure or conflicts with monitoring, recovery or the fertility clinic’s instructions. There is no universal requirement to start one to three months before IVF or to have treatment on transfer day.
Discuss medicines and supplements explicitly
List fertility medicines, anticoagulants, supplements and any pregnancy possibility. Do not start herbal products or alter fertility medication without discussing it with the fertility team. A protocol published in a study is not an individualized treatment plan.
Booking a consultation
Our acupuncture service is available in Manhattan, Forest Hills and Great Neck. Allow approximately 75 minutes for an initial visit. Tell the office your cycle stage and scheduling constraints; confirm the practitioner, duration, price and any follow-up separately.
Practical questions before booking
Is acupuncture on transfer day necessary?
No. It is an optional complementary appointment, and the fertility clinic’s procedure and recovery instructions take priority.
Can anyone guarantee that it will improve implantation?
No. Implantation and live birth depend on many factors, and the evidence does not justify an individual guarantee.
